You Can Become Involved and Support
This Vital Service to Our Community!

Who are these Red Cross Volunteers?

Can I be one?

There is no single profile of a Red Cross volunteer. No matter what your religion, race, gender, education, income or age, chances are there is someone like you already volunteering with us. What we all have in common is a desire to help others in our community to prepare for disasters and emergencies, to provide relief to victims whose lives have been greatly impacted by a disaster, to ensure that our community has a safe and abundant blood supply or to help raise money to support our efforts. We will provide the necessary training you will need. Call or email our office to see how you can be of service to your community.

Common Myths about your Red Cross

You have to be a nurse! Wrong. In fact, most of our volunteers are not related to the medical profession in any way.
The mission of the Red Cross is to help the poor! Wrong. Although this is a noble mission, other organizations do great work with the poor and homeless. We are about preparing (education, training, blood procurement) for disasters and giving help to those who suffer from the effects of disasters.
Red Cross disaster work is dangerous! Wrong. We can’t help others if we are harmed. Red Cross disaster workers are never asked to work in dangerous environments.
Dues are required! Wrong. The Red Cross does not have membership dues.
You have to travel across the country to help disaster victims! Wrong. Only those who are willing and able, and with specialized training are asked to leave the local area. Most Red Cross disasters are handled by volunteers in the community.

The Red Cross is a symbol of hope throughout the world. As part of this humanitarian organization, the American Red Cross of South Central Illinois Chapter, Clinton County Service Center provides relief to victims of single family emergencies and community, national and international disasters. Its mission is to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

Your contributions help the chapter to provide food, clothing, shelter and counseling for victims who incurs disaster incidents each year. Disaster responders work around the clock every day of the week helping those victims in their hours of greatest need.

The South Central Illinois Chapter Red Cross also offers opportunities for members of the community to learn First Aid, CPR and other health and safety skills that will keep them safe in times of emergencies. It provides emergency communications for military families trying to reach their loved ones and offers assistance to those trying to locate family members at the time of international disasters.
